DOES MY CHILD NEED A DYSLEXIA DIAGNOSIS TO RECEIVE TUTORING?
No. Students do not need a dyslexia diagnosis. While reading comes easily to some children, the majority of children require explicit, systematic, and sequential reading instruction to become skilled readers. If you have a child who struggles with reading/spelling or is not making the progress you'd expect, let's work together to get them on the road to success!
WHAT IS ORTON-GILLINGHAM?
Orton–Gillingham was the first teaching approach specifically designed to help struggling readers by explicitly teaching the connections between letters and sounds. Today — decades later — many reading programs include Orton–Gillingham ideas.
The highly structured approach introduced the idea of breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time. It also pioneered the “multisensory” approach to teaching reading, which is considered highly effective for teaching students with dyslexia. This means that instructors use sight, hearing, touch, and movement to help students connect language with letters and words.
WHAT IS MULTISENSORY INSTRUCTION?
Multisensory instruction is a way of teaching that engages more than one sense (touch, sight, hearing, and movement) at a time. During multisensory lessons, children engage with the material in more than one way. When children learn something using more than one sense, they are likely to have deeper engagement with their learning. The result is better retention of the skill!
